Numerai, an AI-driven hedge fund listed “whole-body preservation cryonics” as an employee benefit back in 2017. In a tweet by founder Richard Craib, it was mentioned that the company would be giving all its employees the chance to be cryogenically frozen after their death and resuscitated at some point in the future.
Pawternity Leave:
Employees are frequented with benefits like dog-friendly offices and pet insurances. However, BrewDog, a Scottish brewing company; Mparticle, a customer data company based in New York; BitSol Solutions, a tech company based in Manchester and Nina Polis, a Minneapolis marketing company took it a notch higher and introduced ‘Pawternity leave’.
This benefit offers flexible working hours and paid time off to employees to care for their new pets, be it taking their pets to veterinary appointments or easing the adjustment to their new home. The leave lasts anywhere between 10 hours to one week.
Bailout Benefits:
Patagonia, an American outdoor retailer offers a multitude of expensive benefits to their employees but the perk that takes the cake is its bailout benefit. Patagonia will pay for the bail of employees and their partner’s if they get arrested during a peaceful environmental protest.
Naked Fridays:
Onebestway, a marketing firm in Newcastle, UK championed the idea of Naked Fridays. People talk of nude beaches but working nude in a corporate firm?? Onebestway believed that with getting its employees to go naked, they would shed their inhibitions and open up to their co-workers which would in turn help the company establish an atmosphere of trust.
Egg Freezing:
Many tech companies like Apple, Facebook and Spotify give their female employees the facility to freeze their eggs. This benefit made an entry into the market in 2014 and has become very common today. NBC News reported that the process can cost up to $10,000 with an annual storage cost of $500.
Beauty Budget:
2 HB Incorporated, a Systems and Software Engineering company, offers its employees a monthly $50 allowance to spend solely on manicures, pedicures and haircuts.
Chesapeake Energy, the oil and gas producers offer onsite facilities for Botox injections and tanning beds.
Umpqua Bank, the US financial holding company offers its staff a clothing advance of $500 to build a business wardrobe.
Working Under the Influence:
Companies like MillerCoors, DPR Construction and Advanced Material serve their employees with free beer.
MillerCoors built onsite pubs, offering 13 different varieties of beer to employees in Chicago and Milwaukee, they go out of their way and get their employees to taste test new products.
DPR Construction opened a suave free wine bar in the midst of their bustling office space.
Advanced Medical hosts a ‘beer cart Friday’ allowing its staff to sip on some good old beer every Friday afternoon.
This trend is catching up fast especially with small scale companies that cannot afford to spend much on employee benefits.
Paying Student Loans:
With the new wave of graduates burdened by education loans companies are including paying off student loans in their list of employee benefits. Companies like Hulu and NVIDIA grant employees a stipend to use toward their student loans.
Adoption Assistance:
American Express, the credit card company reimburses employees for $35,000 for their adoption expenses. The policy covers up to a maximum of two adoptions.
Paid Volunteering Time:
Colgate-Palmolive, an American multinational consumer products company; McKesson Corporation, an American company distributing pharmaceuticals and various other companies grant their employees paid time off for volunteering. The duration is usually about eight hours a month.
Patagonia, the outdoor retailer, through the Miracle Grants Program, allows workers to nominate a non-profit organization of their choice to get a $5,000 check.
We hope these perks aren’t taken away now that Work-From-Home is the new norm!
